Africans are determined to achieve the renaissance of the continent and make this century an African century, President Thabo Mbeki said at the weekend.

Speaking at a state banquet given in his honour by the president of Zambia, Levy Mwanawasa, in Lusaka, Mbeki said there was an urgent need for the reform of multilateral institutions.

According to a copy of his toast remarks, Mbeki said: ”As we know, the United Nations is in the process of a reform process and together with other countries on the African continent and countries of the South, we should ensure that there are real reforms of this organisation of the nations of the world.

”We should ensure that through the programmes of the UN, the WTO, World Bank, IMF and others, we are able to defeat poverty and underdevelopment.”

Earlier, foreign affairs spokesperson Ronnie Mamoepa said Mbeki would join Mwanawasa at a wreath-laying ceremony in Lusaka´s Freedom Square on Sunday to remember those who fought for independence.

Mbeki spent some time in Zambia during his years in exile fighting apartheid. The ANC´s headquarters were based in Lusaka during the struggle years.

Mbeki and his delegation would return home on Sunday.
