President Mills and Nguema hold Bilateral Talks
President John Atta Mills and the Visiting President of Equatorial Guinea Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo are holding bilateral talks at the Peduase Lodge. The closed door meeting is centered on how Ghana can assist Equatorial Guinea to improve its agricultural sector. Ghana is also helping that country with expertise to improve its electrification system.
Briefing the media, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Alhaji Mohammed Mumuni said Ghana will tap from the experience of Equatorial Guinea on how to properly handle Ghana’s oil industry devoid of an organized crime and other challenges that come with oil drilling.
Alhaji Mumuni said the high point of the Bilateral talks will be the signing of a number of agreement including agreement on maritime transport, tourism, education, cooperation on labour and social welfare.
He said as Equatorial Guinea prepares to co-host the 2012 African Cup of Nations with Gabon, Equatorial Guinea is ready to learn relevant experience from Ghana.
Some Ministers of States including Energy Minister, Dr. Oteng Adjei, Transport Minister, Mike Hammah, Communications Minister, Haruna Iddrisu and Deputy Food and Agriculture Minister, Nii Armasah Namoaley are attending the meeting.
The two Heads of State are expected to be joined at a luncheon by former Presidents Rawlings and Kufuor.
Entrepreneurs asked to venture into Agriculture to Support Government
President John Evans Atta Mills has called on private entrepreneurs to venture into agriculture to support government’s efforts at making Ghana a net exporter of food. He reiterated that agriculture will still remain the backbone of Ghana’s economy, saying government will do everything to make the sector more attractive and lucrative. He said this will improve the lives of farmers who work hard to feed the nation.
President Mills made the statement when he and his Equatorial Guinean counterpart President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo jointly commissioned Sidalco Company Limited, a Ghanaian fertilizer factory in Accra.
President Mills stated that the private Sector is the engine of growth of any economy, and called on private businesses to invest more in the Agricultural Sector. He said government will create the enabling environment for investors in this regard.
The Equatorial Guinean President, Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, said it is the desire of his government to invest the country’s Oil revenue into the Agricultural Sector, which will support the economy when is no more available.
President Mbasogo said Africans should forge stronger ties and break away from dependence on the developed economies. He called for the encouragement of intra African Trade to help boost the economy of the continent.
President Mbasogo stated emphatically that, he is going to solicit Ghana’s support to help revamp his country’s Agricultural sector.
President Mbasogo is today, Thursday, visiting the Cocoa Research Institute, at Akyem Tafo in the Eastern Region.
As a follow-up to the visit, a delegation of 66 member from Equatorial Guinea has been meeting their Ghanaian counterpart in Accra to review various agreements on hydrocarbons, maritime transport, tourism, fishing, labour and social security, environment and the promotion of women and gender quality.
President Mbasogo, leaves Accra on Friday after the issuance of a Joint Communique and signing of agreement.
Meanwhile, Ghana has received the first consignment of more than one million barrels of crude oil from Equatorial Guinea under an agreement reached during a recent visit to Malabu by President Atta Mills.
The agreement is for two million barrels of oil a year and according to the Minister of Information, John Tia Akologo, the fulfillment of the agreement is indicative of the new wave of bilateral corporation between the two countries
